Share the road safely

Pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers all have a role to play in making Laval a safe and pleasant place to travel.

If you’re walking

Even for short trips, follow these safety guidelines:

  • Cross at the nearest intersection or pedestrian crossing.
  • Do not jaywalk between intersections.
  • Obey pedestrian signals. If none are present, follow traffic lights.
  • Always make eye contact with drivers. If that’s not possible, assume they don’t see you.
  • Walk on the sidewalk or, if unavailable, on the roadside facing traffic.
  • Always check traffic in all directions before crossing.
  • Be extra cautious around heavy vehicles. Their blind spots limit visibility. If you can’t see the driver’s eyes in the mirror or window, they can’t see you either.
  • Wear visible clothing: bright colors or reflective strips.

Stay alert and avoid distractions like headphones, cell phones, or texting while walking or crossing the street.

If you’re cycling

Just like drivers, cyclists must follow the rules outlined in the Highway Safety Code. They have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists.

  • Ride as far to the right as possible and in the same direction as traffic.
  • Ride in a straight line.
  • Ride in single file when cycling in a group.
  • Stop at stop signs and red lights and yield when required.
  • Make eye contact with other road users and signal your intentions before making a move.
  • Sewer grates: Your front wheel could suddenly get stuck in the openings.
  • Car doors: Be aware of parked cars and anticipate sudden door openings.
  • Vehicles exiting private driveways: Always stay alert.
  • Buses: Never pass them on the right, and always respect school bus stops when their flashing lights are on.

Wear a Helmet

This is your only physical protection while cycling. Learn why wearing a helmet is essential at any age and in all circumstances.

Make Yourself Visible

At night, equip your bike with a white front light and a red rear light. Wearing bright clothing or reflective strips is also recommended. The Highway Safety Code requires additional bike accessories:

  • Red reflector at the back.
  • White reflector at the front.
  • Reflectors on the spokes of both wheels, visible from both sides.
  • Yellow reflectors on both pedals.

In addition to using a high-quality lock, did you know you can register your bike by engraving it? This process involves etching a unique number onto the metal and recording it in the Laval Police Service database.

If you’re driving

The main causes of accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles are negligence, inattention, and distraction. Here are essential rules for sharing the road safely:

  • Always stop your vehicle before the stop line.
  • Give the right of way to pedestrians.
  • Obey pedestrian-specific signage.
  • Make a hand gesture to signal them to cross.
  • Turn on your headlights to ensure visibility.
