Car and catalytic converter theft

Protect yourself against three common types of theft: car theft, theft inside vehicles, and the theft of an important part of gas-powered vehicles—the catalytic converter.

Car theft

In 2024, the Canadian government strengthened its efforts to combat vehicle theft. Its action plan includes new measures to better prevent and punish these crimes.

The plan includes:

  • New investigative tools for law enforcement, such as wiretapping and DNA collection.
  • New offenses related to vehicle theft and organized crime, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
  • Penalties for possessing or distributing a device used for vehicle theft, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
  • Harsher sentences for recycling stolen goods for criminal organizations, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
  • Increased penalties for anyone involving minors in criminal activities.

Preventing Theft Inside Vehicles

Valuable items left in plain sight attract attention and can be stolen in seconds.

Protect your vehicle with simple measures:

  • Park in a well-lit area.
  • Lock your doors and close all windows when leaving your vehicle.
  • Do not leave any valuable items visible.
  • Take your electronics with you (phone, tablet, laptop). Sophisticated tools can detect them even in the trunk.
  • Avoid hiding valuables under a blanket or seat—these hiding spots are well known.
  • Activate your car alarm and anti-theft system.
  • Online Police Report
  • If you have been a victim of theft inside your vehicle totaling $5,000 or less, you can file a police report online. [Internal link] It’s simple, fast, and free.

Online Police Report

Catalytic converter theft

The catalytic converter is a part found in gas-powered vehicles. Unfortunately, it is frequently stolen in Laval, Quebec, and across Canada. Here’s how to prevent it:

  • Park your vehicle in a well-lit area.
  • Have your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) engraved to deter thieves and reduce resale opportunities.
  • If your car has an alarm, check if it can be set to respond to vibrations.
  • Use an anti-theft device, such as:
    • A metal mesh cage bolted and welded around the catalytic converter.
    • A Kevlar and steel cable strap, which is difficult to cut.
    • A sound-based anti-theft system designed to protect catalytic converters.
