What is domestic violence?
Domestic violence can occur at any age: in a married couple, between common-law partners, during dating, or even after a breakup. It is generally defined as:
- A series of strategies used by one person to dominate their partner through various behaviors.
- Physical force or threats may be used. The abusive person maintains control through repeated actions such as criticism, surveillance, or isolation.
- The abusive person may also control their partner’s financial resources.
- A cycle of violence where the aggressor continually undermines the victim’s attempts to break free, keeping them under control.
- It can take different forms, including psychological violence (such as control and domination), physical violence, and sexual violence.
Domestic violence can affect people of all ages and occurs in various types of relationships: marital, extramarital, romantic, intimate, or post-separation.
